84 Year Old Man Continuing his Son's Legacy

Photo:  Screen shot from Video

An 84 year old man is continuing his son's legacy of helping those in need.

His son, Michael,  had been a manger of a St. Vincent dePaul.  In addition to conducting an annual toy drive he also would tie warm scarves on a pole for those in need to take to use on cold winter days.

Sadly, Michael passed away, but his father is continuing his legacy by tying scarves outside twice a day at the St. Vincent dePaul's he manages underneath a plastic tarp below a flyer that indicates it is in memory of his son.

What a wonderful legacy to continue.  On a blustery winter day a warm scarf can make all the difference in the world if you don't have one and my God bless this man, his son in Heaven and community that supports this cause with their donations.

1870 Quilt Used to Teach The Solar System

Photo: Source

The Vintage News has and interesting article on how the above quilt made in 1870 by school teacher, Ellen Hardy Baker, to teach her students at that time about the solar system.

To put it in perspective.  This would have been a few years after the Civil War and before women had the right to vote.  All grades would be taught in a one room schoolhouse, usually be one teacher.   There as no indoor plumbing or electrical and likely heated with a stove or fireplace.  The thought we would ever go in to space was only a fantasy..

Yet this young woman's forward thinking created a quilt as a teaching tool to teach her students was was known at the time about the solar system.  It is because of women like her that space travel went from science fiction to Neil Armstrong's first step on the moon, unmanned missions to Mars, probes to other planets and even Voyager 1  that inadvertently left our galaxy.

The quilt is currently housed at the Smithsonian National History Museum.

Strange and Beautiful Weather

While we are being pummelled with snow where I live, I thought I would share this video that was on Facebook of strange and eerily beautiful and sometimes dangerous weather video compilation.

Below are some pictures from Instagram

When A Foodie Makes a Snowman...

A foodie I follow in Instagram, Onceamonthmeals, posted the above picture of their snowman sous chef and have asked for help in naming it.

I suggested "Guy Snoweri" in honor of Celebrity Chef Guy Fieri (the after a shower before hair spiked).

What do you think it should be named?

Upper East Coast Loves Paper Towels and the South East Loves Crayola Crayons - Walmart's Top Selling Items By State 2018

Walmart advised on their website the top purchased items by State and I found the results a little surprising.

While I am not surprised that Insta Pots, which is a basically a pressure cooker crock pot, was a hot item this year with a flurry of knockoff brands on their heels, but was surprised Northern East Coast states top items were Paper Towels and in the South East, Crayola crayons rule.

Not surprising that 3 northern states, Montana, South Dakota and Minnesota loved coffee.

Other items that were popular in many states were the Ozark tumbler and can coolers Coffee and toilet paper.

While to me seeing that Toilet bowl cleaner was tops in Indiana was not a real surprise, as we Hoosiers like a tidy bowl, the results in several other states did:

  • Idaho - Easy Bake Oven Refills
  • Nevada- Flamin Hot Cheese Puffs
  • Vermont - Del Monte Creamed Corn
  • Alaska - Coconut Milk
  • New Mexico - Mason Jars
Were you surprised by any of the top sellers on the list?

Pizza Robots Used By Costco to Make Their Pizza

Mashable on Youtube posted why Costco's Pizza is so delicious and while there is plenty of human interaction on how it is made, there are also two  "robots" used in making the pizza that make it a uniform, consistent product.

Beginning at  3:38 it shows the first machine that presses the ball of dough into a uniform round shape.

The second is the sauce dispenser that spins like an an LP on a turntable dispensing the sauce evenly until it get to the end.

While these robots make the product consistent, what makes it good is the loads of toppings and cheese and at starting at 770 calories, which is around half of the recommended daily allowance for calories, it is more than a meal in itself,
