MUM'S CLOTHESLINE RULES

Source

Although the dryer was invented in the 1800's and the first patent for one was to George T. Simpson in 1892 and the first one went on the market in 1915, they were cost prohibitive and many homes still did not have electricity at that time, so it was more into the late 40's to early 1950's that they became more affordable in most households.

Back then for, and even now for people who do not own and dryer (or even today or to save money or the environment) laundry was/is hung by a clothesline in the yard or in bigger cities between buildings and the unwritten "ruled" applied.

I can attest to this as I grew up in a household without a washer and dryer and my Mom hung out our laundry on a clothesline and when I became tall enough to help I got quipped at many times for not following them.

The clothesline being wiped down was because dew and pollution could gather (not to mention bird poop) and you didn't want that on your freshly washed clothing.

I never did get what the big deal was over the socks being hung by the toes or why in a certain order, but the shirts being hung by the tail was that where the clothespins were clipped might leave marked.

The reason for using the same clip on the edge of two items was to cut down on the number of clothespins used and the reason for bringing them in was they were wooden back then (and many today still are) and it would rot the wood and if there was metal in them it would rust and it could ruin your clothing.

I have to say that frozen clothes look pretty freaky.  And sometimes they still felt a little damp when thawed.

As an aside, when I was in college a fella that I dated briefly had a roommate that refused to spend money on drying clothing at the laundromat and would bring home his wash and hang it about the room on hangers and draping it and turn on several fans he had purchased just for that.  When I was over there during one of his "drying" sessions even though it was a hot summer day and they didn't have air conditioning, it was loud and felt like being in a hurricane.

Have you or anyone you know used a clothesline to dry clothing?

PUBLIC ART: NEW HAVEN BULLDOG PROJECT - Life Line Stem Cell Large and Small Fiberglass Statues

This is part of New Haven, Indiana's first public art project that was initiated in 2019.

An article on KPC New indicated it was for a fundraiser to show off local pride and talents of local artists.

Local businesses (and since inception, some individuals) could "adopt" a large bulldog fiberglass statue for $2,500 and a small one for $900, which included artwork and installation.  This company, Life Line Stem Cell, adopted one of each.

A bulldog was chosen as it is the mascot of the local high school.

The proceeds are being used to purchase Christmas decorations for the town and refurbish the ball diamonds at Havenhurst Park and they are also considering adding public benches.

2020: 13 Full Moons including 2 Supermoons and a Blue Moon

Photo:  Pixabay via Syracuse,com

Syracuse, com indicates there will be 13 full moons in 2020, which includes two supermoons (March 9th & April 7th) and a Blue Moon (the Blue Moon will be on Halloween this year).

Per Wikipedia a Supermoon was named by astrologer Richard Noelle in 1979 who described it as:
"A new or full moon which occurs with the Moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit (perigee). In short, Earth, Moon and Sun are all in a line, with Moon in its nearest approach to Earth."

Farmer's Almanac indicates a "Blue Moon" is when there are two full moons in a month, which average every 2 1/2 to 3 years.

For a full listing of dates and times of the full moons, visit Farmersalmanac.com here.

UPCYCLED: Giant Fish Sculpture Created From Discarded Water Bottles

Photo: Source

The above is an art installation sculpture made of discarded plastic bottles with blue and red LED lights on the inside. The sign means "Recycle your attitude".

It is Botafogo Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that was created in 2012 as the Brazil, UN Conference on Sustainable Development as being held there that year.

On thing that is sad though is that TripAdvisor reviewers indicate the beach has a beautiful view but is very polluted.

UNUSUAL AD: 2020 - RIPeanut - Planter's Peanuts

As an unusual advertising ploy and clever way to refresh their brand image, Entertainment posted today that beloved mascot of Mr. Peanut has met his demise after an accident in the Nutmobile and he sacrificed himself to save his friends Matt Walsh and Wesley Snipes.

Of course, in today's day and age, it was all caught on video in the above that was posted on Twitter.

Oreo Cookie sent their condolences and encourage a 21 Dunk Salute in his honor.

Unique Art: Painted Stone Animals by Japanese Stone Artist Akie

Aren't these adorable?  They are the work of Japanese Stone Artist Akie Nakata.   Some are so detailed they look like the actual creature they are made to represent, like the bird, owl and frog.

An article on Daily Shared indicates Akie is a self-taught artist that loved picking up stones as a child and has been making these creations since 2011.

She sometimes sells her adorable creations through a posting on Facebook  and there are more pictures of her work on that page.

"Poodle" Cats

Photo: Buzznick

Don't they look like they have the fur of a poodle or an old teddy bear?

The name of this breed is Selkirk Rex, names after the Selkirk Mountains in Wyoming where the first litter with the curly hair genetic quirk was born in 1987.

An article on Buzznick  indicates they run between $500-$800 and good with people and other animals.

Unique Find: Open Book Fountain- Budapest, Hungary

I love books, so when I stumbled across the above fountain in a video I knew I had to share it here.

The fountain give the illusion that a giant invisible hand is flipping pages in a book.

I did find an article on Stonenews.eu indicates:

"This particular book fountain, which is located in Egyetem Square in Budapest, was built in 2012 and sits in front of the Eötvös Loránd University of Sciences."

Have you come across any cool fountains?

Betty White Turns 98 Today!

Photo:  Photo: Source

Happy 98th Birthday Betty White!

Wikipedia reports she has the longest career of any entertainer in television with a career spanning over 80 years, has over 117 credits currently on IMDB.com if you saw the movie "Toy Story 4" recently, she was the voice of the toy tiger "Bitey White", one of Bonnie's older toys that is stashed in the closet.

Her career began in 1939 a few months out of high school singing with a classmate on television on an experimental television channel in Los Angeles and went to modeling and doing radio voice-overs and bit parts (radio plays were very popular then and not many people had a television), getting her own radio show in 1949.

She was the first woman to produce a sitcom, called "Life With Elizabeth" which starred White as part of a suburban couple for 1953-1955 and was the honorary mayor of Hollywood in 1955.

She is probably best known for her roles as Sue Ann Nivens in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" in the 70's and or ditzy Rose Nylund in "Golden Girls" from 1985-1992 (the latter is currently available with a subscription on Hulu.

She also rocked the 2010 Superbowl Commercial for Snickers candy bars (video link at the bottom).

Interesting Find: 350lb 50 Year Old Grouper Caught off the Coast of Florida

350lb pound Grouper caught off the coast of Florida with just a hook and a line.

Biologist's at FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute that tested it believe it is 50 years old and is the oldest specimen in their collection.

USA Today  article has additional information and also stated another thing the fisherman is catching is flack for killing the fish instead of returning it to the sea.  It does seem sad that it would live to such a ripe old age, but it is an interesting find.

Unique Music: 3 Accordions by 3 Generations Playing "Beer Barrel Polka"

Have you ever seen so much aqua and blue polyester on men before?

As a child, it was almost guaranteed if you were at my Grandparents on a Saturday night that you would be watching Lawrence Welk.

I didn't care for the singing and dancings so much, but like many kids, I liked to watch the bubbles generated by a machine during some numbers.

I also like the accordions as well; it looked like people were wearing a mini piano on their chest.

In the above video gem indicates it is from 1981 and features not one, not two, but three accordions played by three generations of men, one being Mr. Welk himself, playing the "Beer Barrel Polka".

TREND ALERT: ANKLE SCARVES

Photo:  Source

I read of this trend on Delish.  While there isn't a specific "ankle scarf" some are using children's scarves to fashion around their ankles.

I think it is kind of cute but think I would end up tripping over the little scarf ends.

When I posted it on social media responses ranged from:

  • It is stupid as that was what socks and pants were
  • Uhm..I think I'll pass
  • Agreed they would probably end up tripping over the loose ends too.

What are your thoughts on this trend?

He Is Beary Comfortable

Photo:  Mandy Stanic via Mashable

It looks like all his is missing is a television and a remote.  Wonder what he would watch:  "Grizzly Adams"?  "Paddington"? or perhaps "Winnie the Pooh".

The photo was taken by Mandy Stantic when visiting a dump in Northern Manitoba, Canada when she spotted this fella chilling on a discarded sofa.

Perhaps Auditioning for a "Roller Boogie" Reboot?

My cousin that lives in Hot Springs, Arkansas reposted the above video.

Not sure what to say about this...he's got style, he's got grace, hoping he is not hit by a car and land on his face?

It is for sure giving me "Roller Boogie" vibes; it was a 1979 movie featuring the little girl from "The Exorcist" dancing on rollerskates and a song in the movie by Cher. (Trailer below).

VINTAGE PHOTO: 23 YEAR OLD JOHN WAYNE

When I was a kid I was fed a steady dose of silver screen legend John Wayne westerns, war movies, and cop dramas, but it was not until recently I stumbled across a picture of him as a young man.

It is hard to believe the rough and tumble tough guy was such a fresh-faced young lad.

UNUSUAL AD: 2016 TYLENOL COLD & FLU AD: FOR THE ONE TIME YOU WISH YOUR KIDS WOULDN'T SHARE

This ad was spotted at the end of a grocery cart at a Surplus store.

While it says you wish they wouldn't share, it is giving mixed messages because that seems to be exactly what they are doing.

Monument Circle, Indianapolis, Indiana - 1920

What a difference nearly 100 years has made!   Back then there was only one high rise building in the background at the far right; now, it is surrounded by high rise buildings.

What is still there is the Soldiers and Sailor Monuments itself and the light on either side of it.

The photo above was taken 1920; the view from Google Maps below is from August, 2018
