WEATHER: COLDER IN HOUSTON THAN IN BOSTON

There has been unusual weather in the past few days.  As the young man in the video below points out, it was colder in Houston than it was in Boston and the North East coast with the windchill factor.

Places that rarely get snow, like Texas and Arkansas are getting pummeled with it.

Where I live there was a record snowfall accumulation over 2 days in 48 years (snapshot from WANETV.COM below)

FLYOVER IN FORT WAYNE TO HONOR COVID-19 HEROS

In honor of healthcare workers, first responders, and essential workers during COVID-19, the  122nd Fighter Wing did a flyover in Downtown Fort Wayne.

Embassy Animated Window Display - 2019

The Embassy Theater has continued the tradition that began in the 1920s when Wolf & Dessauer Department store with animatronic Christmas displays.

Below is a timeline in one of the current windows on display:



I think these are the ones that were originally on display at Wolf and Dessauer and on loan from the History Center.

Gravesite of "Johnny Appleseed" John Chapman

Johnny Appleseed Festival  is this weekend, September 21-22, 2019 from 10PM- 6PM Saturday and 10AM to 5PM  Sunday, in Fort Wayne, IN and as his gravesite is nearby I thought I would share it here.

You may have learned of John Chapman a/k/a "Johnny Appleseed" in history class in grade school or Jr. High and how he went throughout the countryside and scattered apple seeds. In reality, he planted orchards.   Below it indicates it was in Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois.  He was also a missionary of the Swedenborgian religion and a legendary folk hero even while living.

He was known to travel barefoot and wear rags and sometimes just a coffee sack and he would befriend every person and creature he met.   

In his obituary it indicated that he ‘submitted to every privation with cheerfulness and content, believing that in so doing he was securing snug quarters hereafter."

On the New England Historical Society page, as he is originally from Massachusetts, indicates he planted seeds in Western, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana as well as Ontario, Illinois, and West Virginia.   The article also indicates the seeds produced a bitter apple that was only good for making hard cider.  

His final resting place is Fort Wayne, IN where he lived an worked from 1835 until his passing in 1845.

It is not on Harry W. Baals Dr; it is up two driveways if going North.  Yes, our mayor was Harry Baals from 1934-1948. If you are driving south and see Harry Baals Drive, you have gone too far; it is two driveways North.

Last Days of Carson's in Glenbrook Mall

Sadly, a major department store closing is no longer unique or unusual.  Another anchor store at this mall, Sears, announced after 52 years, it will be closing as well.   However, it is still a little jarring to see such a large space so empty.

This is the 3rd retailer that has came and went at this location; the first was Hudson's, the next Marshall's and for awhile before Carson's opened a few years ago, there had been a glow-in-the-dark miniature golf course.

We went to check out what the store looked like 5 days before it was scheduled to close. They had moved what merchandise they had left to sell towards the back left side of the store.  The sign said everything for sale was upstairs and it was implied we should not go downstairs, so we didn't.

All of the makeup counters were empty, as were all the shelves and wall displays.  Some of the fixtures were marked "Sold" and other were for sale.  Some of the racks were $5 or $10.

We were surprised that my guest found something to buy as most of it was picked over, but he did find a blue checked Van Heusen shirt that had originally been $55 and purchased it for $10.80 with tax.   I ended up purchasing one of the hangers pictured below for $2.

I was surprised at how small the place seemed when most everything was out of there.

I hope they find a new tenant soon as many in the tri-state area come to Glenbrook to shop.  I am just a guilty as the next person when it comes to online shopping as it is quicker and you have a better selection, but it is not the same experience as shopping at a brick and mortar store where you can check out what you are buying in person.
